Not require

Jan 25th @ 5:34pm EST

The teacher learned that one of his students was insistently seeking someone's love. "Don't ask for love, you won't get it," the teacher said. â€" But why?" â€" Tell me, what do you do when uninvited guests break into your door, when they knock, shout for you to open it, and tear their hair out because they are not allowed to open it?" â€" I'm locking it up more." â€" Do not break into the doors of other people's hearts, so they will be even more closed before you. Become a welcome guest and any heart will open before you. Take the example of a flower that does not chase bees, but by giving them nectar, attracts them to itself.

About man and the World

Jan 22nd @ 5:10pm EST

One day, when it was a gray, rainy day, a boy named Pat could not find a place for himself and hung around his father, preventing the latter from preparing for the report.
When his father's patience was at an end, he pulled one of the old magazines out of the pile, tore out a large colorful sheet with a map of the world, tore it into many small pieces, and handed them to his son, saying: "Pat, make a map out of these pieces again, and I'll give you money for ice cream."
It seemed that even for an adult, it would not be work for 5 minutes, especially for a small Pat.
What was the surprise of the father when the son knocked on his room with the completed task after 10 minutes.
"How did you manage to complete the task so quickly?"my father asked.
"It wasn't very difficult," Pat said. - Just on the other side of the map, there was a large drawing of a man. I just turned all the pieces with the map on the contrary, collected the image of the person and turning the sheet over again got a correctly assembled map of the world. I thought that if a person is right, then the world will be right.
The father smiled and handed his son the money for ice cream.
"If a person is right, then the world will be right," my father reflected, realizing that he definitely had the title of the report.
There is a valuable lesson in this story.
If you don't like your world, then start changing it by changing yourself. If you are OK, then your environment will be OK.

About sadness

Jan 21st @ 3:40pm EST

One old man was asked:
"Father, what is sadness?»
"'To be sad is to think of yourself all the time, '" he answered briefly.

I go without my breakfast

Jan 21st @ 2:38am EST

Today’s podcast is about breakfast. Probably most people think of “breakfast” as the meal you eat at the beginning of the day, when you first wake up. However, it is more complicated than that.

First, let’s look at what the word “breakfast” really means. As you probably know, the word “fast” has several, completely different meanings in English. One of the meanings of “fast” is a period when you do not have any food to eat. So, for example, Muslims fast during the month of Ramadan â€" they do not eat anything between sunrise and sunset. A “breakfast” is, literally, a meal which you eat at the end of a period of fasting. When you eat breakfast, you break â€" or end â€" your fast.

When I get up in the morning, I have not had anything to eat since about 7 o’clock the night before. Now that is not a very long fast â€" perhaps 12 hours, but not more. However, the meal which we eat first thing in the morning breaks our overnight fast, so we call it “breakfast”.

What do you eat for breakfast? I have a bowl of muesli with milk, two pieces of toast with marmalade, and two cups of coffee. Some people go for a run first thing in the morning, and then have a breakfast of fruit and orange juice. They are slim and fit and healthy and they make me feel guilty so I do not like them. Other people have no breakfast at all â€" they do not eat until the middle of the day. Nutritionists tell us that it is not a good idea to go without breakfast, because your concentration is poor if you have not had anything to eat. Other people eat huge breakfasts, with fried eggs and bacon, sausages, mushrooms and fried bread. In hotels and restaurants, a big cooked breakfast is called an “English breakfast”. Actually, very few English people eat a cooked breakfast every day. We do not have time. We are in a hurry to catch the bus or the train and get to work.

I am very interested in breakfast today, because I have not had any! The doctor has the silly idea that I may have too much cholesterol in my blo0od. So, later today, I have to go to have a blo0od test. The nurse will stick an enormous needle into my arm, and take out several litres of blo0od, and send the blo0od away to a laboratory to be tested. The laboratory will of course send back a report to say that my bl0od cholesterol is absolutely wonderful, and that they have never seen such magnificent blo0od before. But â€" and this is the terrible bit â€" the bl0ood test is what the doctor calls a “fasting blo0od test”. That means that I must not eat anything for at least 12 hours before the test. So, no breakfast.

Now, it would be sensible to have a fasting blo0od test early in the morning, so that I do not have to wait a long time to have something to eat. However, the nurse who takes the blo0od tests only works in the afternoon, so I cannot eat anything until about 3 o’clock. You have no idea how terrible this is. It is the middle of the morning, and I am hungry, really hungry. I cannot stop thinking about breakfast. Surely a very little bowl of muesli and one slice of toast with no marmalade would be OK. Surely a very small breakfast would not ruin the bl0od test. However, the nurse who does the blo0od tests is big and fierce, and so I stay hungry.

And now the telephone rings. It is the receptionist at the doctor’s surgery. She is very sorry, but the fierce nurse who does the blo0od tests is unwell and cannot come to work today. Please can she re-arrange the blo0od test for another day. How do I feel? What is my reaction to this news? First, of course, I am relieved. I can eat my breakfast! I do not have to fast until the middle of the afternoon. But I am also annoyed. Why? Because I will have to go without my breakfast on another day in a few weeks time.

Finally, I have an English expression for you to learn. I have talked about people who “go without” their breakfast, or “do without” their breakfast. If you “do without” something, or “go without” something, you decide that you do not need it â€" perhaps because you do not have time, or you do not have enough money. Here are some more things you might “do without”.

If you do not have enough money, you might have to do without new clothes or shoes.

If you are very busy at work, you might go without your normal lunch break.

If you feel tired and unwell, you might decide to do without your normal trip to the cinema, and go to bed early instead.

And if the blo0od test tells me that I have too much cholesterol in my blo0d, I might have to do without butter, and cheese, and chocolate, or all sorts of other nice things to eat. I might even have to go for a run first thing in the morning, and eat fruit and drink orange juice for breakfast. It is too awful to think about!

A Parable About Poverty and Wealt

Jan 20th @ 2:08pm EST

Once upon a time Poverty and Wealth came up to a man.- Which of us is more attractive? â€" They started to ask.
The man got scared and started to think â€~If I tell that Poverty is more attractive, Wealth may get angry and go away. And if I tell that Wealth is more attractive than Poverty will be angry and curse me.’ After all he found what to say:

â€" While you are standing like that I can’t find the solution. You should walk.

So Poverty and Wealth began walking around. The man looked at them and said:

â€" You, Poverty, look great from the back while walking away. And you, Wealth, look fine in the moment of coming.

Warming

Jan 19th @ 4:47pm EST

Global warming is the long-term rise in the average temperature of the Earth's climate system.

It is a major aspect of current climate change.

The largest human influence has been the emission of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide.

The effects of global warming include rising sea levels and expansion of deserts.

Surface temperature increases are greatest in the Arctic, which has contributed to the retreat of glaciers and sea ice.

Environmental impacts include the extinction or relocation of many species as their ecosystems change.

Countries work together on climate change under the umbrella of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

The ultimate goal of the convention is to "prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system".

UNABLE LEGEND

Jan 19th @ 2:04am EST

“Cosmetic surgery,” said the eagle, “is not only useful in the light of the current level of social development: it is practically necessary.
When he cut his claws and shortened his beak, everyone around him liked the result so much that they did the same.
Almost all. Ravens did not attend to the improvement of their appearance. They grew their claws and began to wait for the day when - if it happened that social taboos, under the pressure of circumstances, allow claw growth again, other predators practicing pedicure and developing civilization will simply not know what the claws are for.

Marry or not?

Jan 17th @ 6:07pm EST

A rich young man came up to a dervish who was sitting in the market-place, and putting a gold piece in a begging-bowl, said:
"Venerable one, I need your advice. I like a girl. Really like. And I am tormented now, for I do not know what to do: marry or not.
â€" Not marry.
â€" But why?"!
â€" If you really wanted to, you wouldn't have asked."

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

Jan 15th @ 1:55pm EST

Great Britain lies on the Atlantic coast of Western Europe, separated from France by only 34 km (21 miles) of water. It is made up of three countries: England, Scotland and Wales. Great Britain with Northern Ireland forms the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The capital of the United Kingdom is London, in England. The capital of Wales is Cardiff, and the Scottish capital is at Edinburgh.

Great Britain’s largest island neighbour is Ireland. This is mainly occupied by the independent Republic of Ireland. The remainder is Northern Ireland which is a part of the United Kingdom. Many small islands are also linked with the United Kingdom.

Although a small island, Great Britain has a remarkable variety of landscapes. To the north and west are highlands - the mountains of Scotland, Cumbria and Wales, and the Pennine Chain. To the east are flat plains, and in the south are lowlands broken by low ranges of hills. To the Southwest are the bleak moors of Devon and Cornwall.

The continent of Europe extends out below the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, in the form of a continental shelf. Great Britain is perched on this shelf, surrounded by the shallow waters of the North Sea, the Irish Sea and the English Channel.

A warm ocean current, the Gulf Stream, washes Britain’s western shores. This water heats up and cools down very slowly. Britain therefore enjoys warmer winters and cooler summers than other countries at the same latitude. The west of the island has a higher rainfall and slightly milder climate than the east.

Britain has been many centuries in the making. The Romans conquered Britain, but were unable to subdue the independent tribes in the west and the north. Other invaders were Angles, Saxons, Jutes, Vikings and Normans. England waged numerous colonial wars and was the empire for many centuries. England was the first country where capitalism was established.

Great Britain is a highly developed industrial country. It is known as one of the largest producers and exporters of machinery, electronics, textile, aircraft and navigation equipment. One of the chief industries of the country is shipbuilding.

The UK is a constitutional monarchy. The powers of the British Queen are limited by the Parliament. The British Parliament consists of the sovereign, the House of Lords and the House of Commons.

Parable: the Offended disciple and potatoes

Jan 14th @ 4:35pm EST

The student asked the teacher: "You are so wise. You're always in a good mood, never angry. Help me be like this. The teacher agreed and asked the student to bring potatoes and a transparent bag. "If you get mad at someone and hold a grudge," the teacher said, " take this potato." On one side, write your name, on the other the name of the person with whom the conflict occurred, and put this potato in a bag. â€" Is that all?" the apprentice asked, puzzled. "No," said the teacher. You should always carry this bag with you. And every time you take offense at someone, add potatoes to it. The student agreed. Some time passed. The student's bag was filled with several more potatoes and became quite heavy. It was very inconvenient to always carry with you. In addition, the potatoes that he put in the beginning began to deteriorate. It was covered with a slimy, nasty coating, some sprouted, some bloomed and began to emit a sharp unpleasant smell. The student came to the teacher and said: - It is no longer possible to carry it with you. First, the package is too heavy, and secondly, the potatoes have deteriorated. Suggest something else. But the teacher replied: "The same thing happens in your soul. When you are angry with someone, you are offended, then you have a heavy stone in your soul. You just don't notice it right away. Then the stones become more and more. Actions turn into habits, habits into character, which gives rise to fetid vices. And it is very easy to forget about this load, because it is too heavy to carry it constantly with you. I gave you the opportunity to observe the whole process from the outside. Every time you decide to take offense or, on the contrary, offend someone, think about whether you need this stone.

Parable of love.

Jan 13th @ 3:26pm EST

- What is the difference between "Like" and "Love"?
"When you like a flower, you pick it. But if you love a flower, you water it daily.

My Future Profession Is A Journalist

Jan 12th @ 4:54pm EST

I have decided to become a journalist. I think it is an interesting and useful profession.

I like to watch TV, listen to the radio, read newspapers and magazines. I like everything which is connected with mass media.

I have a hobby. My friends and I are publishing a small newspaper once a month in our school. We write articles about school events, life of young people, jokes, draw pictures and caricatures. My favorite school subjects are history and literature.

I like the profession of a journalist. They meet many people. They try to understand what is going on in the world, or the country, or the city and try to explain it to other people.

I think that the work of a journalist is very much like that of a historian. A historian studies and tries to explain events of the past and a journalist does the same about the present.

But for me to be a journalist is much more interesting than to be a historian because you deal with real events that are happening right now so you can even influence them.

So journalists can influence the history. That is why I want to be a journalist.

Parable about friends

Jan 11th @ 6:32pm EST

The wise man was asked: "How many kinds of friendship are there?»
"Four," he said. "There are friends like food â€" you need them every day.
There are friends as medicine-you look for them when you feel bad.
There are friends like a disease-they are looking for you.
But there are friends like air â€" you can't see them, but they are always with you."

Parable: The Gardener and the Letter

Jan 10th @ 4:24pm EST

Once a letter came from a friend to a gardener who was serving in a secluded estate. They had not seen each other for a long time and now a friend sent a message. The message overcame mountains and rivers, for months through rain and heat it went to its addressee. The gardener was extremely happy when he received it. The letter was short: "I water the flowers in the garden," it read. The gardener was in terrible excitement. For days on end he wandered around the garden like a blind man, could not think of any work, but in general nothing but writing. He reflected on a worthy answer. I wanted to talk about a lot, and about a lot to ask. To convey the main thing, not to forget important little things, to convey the fragrance of your present life and the joy of a friend’s message. For several weeks, the gardener wrote the answer. Finally he was ready. “I also water the flowers” - it was written in it. The gardener sent a letter on a long journey and, contentedly, returned to his daily affairs.

Parable: Kindness

Jan 9th @ 5:26pm EST

Sage Takuan had many followers. Among them was an old man whose name no one remembered. He was a little eccentric. Once this old man sent his servant to Takuan to invite the master to a meal after the ceremony. “No matter how modest my food, I want Takuan to taste boiled rice with barley in my house,” said the old man to the servant. Takuan, who loved this dish, readily accepted the invitation and went to visit the old man. There he was offered a large plate full of porridge from rice and barley. The old man had no seasonings for porridge. On the table there was not even a pickled radish takuan-zuke, prepared according to the recipe of a sage. Usually unpretentious, Takuan this time thought: “Surely the old man will not give any salt to the rice?”, But there was no time to ask questions, since his mouth was occupied with delicious porridge. The old man sat quietly in front of the guest, waiting for the end of the meal. When the sage’s belly was full, he got up to leave, but the old man stopped him and asked: “Takuan-san, I treated you with boiled rice, and you leave without even thanking me.” Do monks do this? “You invited me to taste boiled rice with barley.” You did not invite me to say thank you, Takuan answered without delay and quickly left the house. This answer touched the old man, and he decided someday to recoup on Takuan. Once, an old man wondered how he could catch a sage by word. At that very moment Takuan ran into his house and exclaimed: “It pours on the street like a bucket!” Please lend me an umbrella and geta (wooden shoes). The old man was glad of the opportunity to recoup and very politely offered him what he asked. The old man was sure that this time Takuan would thank him, but this did not happen again. Takuan quickly left the house and soon sent a young monk to return the taken things. The monk looked like his master - he did not thank the old man, but only left things and left home. A few days later, Takuan and the old man met over tea. The old man decided that it was time to talk about everything, and began from afar: “You were not lucky that day when the rain caught you on the street, right? - Yes, no luck. I hope the young monk returned the umbrella and geta to you! “Of course I did.” It was very nice of you, ”said the old man, noting that he involuntarily thanks Takuan. How could he have made such a mistake? Takuan sat across from the old man and smiled. The old man could no longer restrain himself and blurted out: - Takuan-san, you are poorly brought up. You could at least say thank you to me! “If I say thank you, I will pay you my debt,” said Takuan in a calm voice. “I always thank you to myself and never forget your kindness.” If a person expects gratitude for his kindness, this is not real kindness. You should not expect to witness the joys of others and hear their praise. Good deeds in themselves should give you pleasure, and at the same time, giving something to others or helping them, you should not expect a reward. That is real kindness. You are fooling yourself if you are doing something good out of vanity or complacency. In doing so, you allow the error to enter into you. People are prone to greed. Doing a favor to others, they seek to receive something in return. He does not understand anything in people who does not see the difference between kindness and interest. If you do good, guided only by your personal interests, you make a mistake. If, with each of your actions, you try to help others, you will never be disappointed.

Shopaholism

Jan 7th @ 2:17pm EST

Shopaholism can be called a modern mental disease. More and more people become addicted to shopping nowadays. Such people can spend hours wandering in malls or shopping centres. And they can’t control themselves. Chopaholics just can’t keep from buying new goods. It goes without saying that most of shopaholics are women. They explain such behaviour as the normal one because, they say, women have to care about their appearance more than men do. That’s why women spend many hours choosing clothes, shoes, accessories and cosmetics. Many women consider shopping an important part of their life. However, is shopaholism an innocent hobby? Many specialists think that shopaholism can be compared with smoking, alcoholism or even drug abuse. Shopaholics themselves admit that the process of buying gives them satisfaction. It helps them to forget about their problems. But it also has side-effects; some people may feel disappointed or guilty afterwards. To sum up, shopaholism is a dangerous hobby. It leads to emotional, social and obviously financial problems. Nevertheless, most people do not realize how distructive it can be. Probably in the nearest future shopaholics will have a special treatment that will prevent them from destroying their lives.
